It is surprising what a secret a character can keep, and wield in due time like a hidden card in the card game of the plot. Meanwhile it is 1945, the war has ended, the victorious songs and cries of the Red Army returning from the Volga are echoed by intermittently broadcasting their heroic return home on communist radio; The fascists lost, well! The war ended, but not the other one that followed it, the one that former captain Sergei Nikolaevich Vokhmentsev must live through, a former front-line soldier selling his watch and finding all kinds of defeated by the existential precariousness in the market of his hometown, even though he should already enjoy the victory: with parents selling the uniform of their sons who are war veterans, laurel merchants - because no food tastes the same -, and there he will run into Sergeant Pavel, or rather a possible Odra driver for Katyushas; Can a soldier be envious of others in town who do have a profession? The film lengthens, in my opinion unnecessarily, to more than 3 hours a plot that could have been edited in 2; Sergei does not forgive the mistakes of his father, who will finally be arrested almost at the end and Sergei's secret is the anger and resentment directed against his companion in the trench Uvarov who was commanding the third battery of the regiment in the Carpathians simultaneously with the captain. Sergei the First Battery. Sergei will never forgive Uvarov - and will lead to violence, first in the restaurant and then at the New Year's Eve celebration at Nina's house, the married woman with whom he has an affair - for the fact that 27 people have died on the front. because he alleges that Uvarov abandoned his responsibility to cover him on the flank and left his man Vasilenko alone. It's nice how love is being born between Konstantion Kostya, Sergei's great friend, and the former captain's sister Asya. Asya slowly gives in, because from the beginning the 19-year-old girl only disowns and repels him until she realizes that she will lose Kostya because he is going to study engineering, and just when she will need his company the most due to her grief when her father is arrested. In the end, it is not a Western story with a happy ending but a Slavic one: Sergei - the father is right - ends up paying in a certain way for the consequences or decisions of his father, and must abandon his engineering studies, in that sense Kostya had better luck . And he is seen with a wink of certain joy to the story at the end, finding oil in the desert in a detachment of workers that he fortunately leads to success and is accompanied by Nina.
